Cohen, Helene

5th Grade Hebrew & Holidays

Helene Cohen is originally from Brooklyn, New York and has resided in Baltimore for the past 34 years. She attended the Community College of Baltimore and University of Maryland at Baltimore County where she received her expanded and national certification as a dental assistant. She worked at the University of Maryland Dental School Faculty practice and taught at Medix as well as Howard Community College. Helene joined the staff in 2003 as a substitute and became the 5th Grade Hebrew teacher in 2004.

Halpren, Risa

Family Education

Risa Halpren joined the Temple Emanuel staff in 2005 as the Family Educator. Prior to that, she served as a substitute teaher for the religious school. Risa also works full time as a math and science resource teacher for the Baltimore County Schools. She is married to Howard Halpren and mom to Josh and Danny Halpren. Any spare time is usually spent with her family. She is very pleased to be a member of the Temple Emanuel faculty!

Jablon, Karen

4B Hebrew

Karen Jablon has been teaching at Temple Emanuel Religious School since 1983. She has a BA from Goucher College and from Baltimore Hebrew University. She completed her MS at Johns Hopkins University and her MA from Baltimore Hebrew Univeristy. Karen is currently a Special Education teacher in the Howard County Public School System. Karen has been our 6th Grade Hebrew teacher for the last 3 years.This year Karen will serve as the Madrichim coordinator

Kessler, Claudette

1st Grade

Claudette Kessler holds a BA in Education from The College of Notre Dame. She teaches Kindergarten in Baltimore City and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education. Claudette is the creator of the educational program for children known as “Totsercise”. She has been teaching at Temple Emanuel for 14 years, currently teaches 1st Grade, and has 3 sons of her own.

Lawless, Lori

2nd Grade

Lori Lawless is originally from Rockland County, New York, and graduated from the State Universities of New York at Albany (BS in Biology) and Binghamton (MA in Biology). She works at the US Food and Drug Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. She now is an Investigator of Medical Device and Pharmaceutical manufacturers. Lori and her husband Gordy became members of Temple Emanuel in 1998. She has been a teacher since 2001, and teaches either kindergarten or second grade.

Mond, Sharon

3A & 4th Grade Hebrew/4th & 5th Grade Tefillah

Sharon Mond grew up in Pikesville, Maryland. She graduated from Goucher College, majoring in Psychology, Elementary Education and Dance. Sharon earned her masters degree from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, Pa, in Creative Arts therapy and received post masters training in special education and counseling at schools in New York and Baltimore. She currently has a license in Clinical Counseling, Dance Therapy, and is certified as a teacher in the State of Maryland. This is Sharon's third year on staff and has been a member of Temple Emanuel for 15 years.

Moshenberg, Andre

Confirmation Teacher

Andre has been teaching at Temple Emanuel for nine years. This is his sixth year as our co-Confirmation teacher. He has also taught the Jews in Rock N' Roll mini-mester for the last five years. He has a degree in Speech Communication/Mass Communications from St. Cloud State University. In addition to being a teacher and congregant at Temple Emanuel, Andre is in the process of becoming the Administrator at Milford Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pikesville. When not teaching, working, or spending time with his family, Andre likes to trade live music and talk about baseball.

Narrow, Barbara

Yachad

Barbara Narrow is originally from Bucks County Pennsylvania. She received her BS in Individual and Family Studies from Penn State University and her MS in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova University. Barbara has over seventeen years experience working with children, adolescents and their families in a variety of treatment settings. She has been teaching at temple now for nine years as the Coordinator of the parent programming aspect of the Yachad program. Barbara has two children, David 16 and Sarah 11.

Sober, Karen

Director of Education

Karen Sober has been the Director of Education at Temple Emanuel since July of 2001. Karen earned her degree in Secondary Education and Psychology from Bucknell University in 1997 and her Masters in Jewish Education from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles, California in 2001.

Since joining the staff of Temple Emanuel, Karen has immersed herself in the Greater Baltimore Jewish Community. She serves on the Board of the Center for Jewish Education. She is a member of the Reform Educators Council and is the Co-Chair of the Principal's Council. As an active member of the National Association of Temple Educators, she serves as the NATE representative to the Commission on Social Action.

Tamber, Caryn

Kindergarten

Caryn Tamber joined the staff of Temple Emanuel Religious School in 2005, as a Kindergarten teacher. She grew up in Plainview, NY, on Long Island. During the week Caryn works as a legal affairs reporter at The Daily Record newspaper. She is in possession of what is probably the largest housecat in the Baltimore area, a black and white cat named Franklin. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and cooking.

Watts, Captain Heber

Kadimah

Heber is a Maryland State Police Captain with more than 27 years experience in criminal investigation and patrol operations. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Johns Hopkins University and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree at Hopkins. Heber became a Para-Rabbi in 1999 after attending the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and has been on the religious school faculty at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation for 14 years teaching ethics. Heber taught at Temple Emanuel three years ago and is returning this year to teach his specialized mini-mester in sexual ethics.

Yospa, Abbe

Religious School Administrative Assistant

Abbe Yospa has been a Baltimorean all her life. She has a BS in Early Childhood Education and taught her in Maryland for several years. She also went back to school for her degree in Medical Assisting/Medical Secretary. After taking a few years off from work to raise her children (Blake 18 & Samantha Megan 17), Abbe decided to return to the working world to be the Administrative Assistant for the Religious School at Temple Emanuel and Karen's right hand. She has been on staff for 4 1/2 years. Abbe and her husband Robert have been members of Temple Emanuel for the past ten years. Her interests are motorcycling with her husband, taking trips in a RV, spending time quietly reading and taking care of her two adorable shitzus, Harley and Aubrey. If you don't know who Abbe is, she is the one downstairs with everything you need for school, band-aids and a smile on her face.
